  • Update on lyfe

I have moved. New studio. Stoked, I am. Sweet location.

I have gotten a new job. Quit one of my two current jobs, with two weeks pending on the other. Start new job in few weeks.

I finally got a new stylus for my turntable. Vinyl. Woot!

The Portland Timbers FC open their season on April 17th against Puerto Rico. Timber Jim is retiring, so if you call yourself a portlander, you simply must be there. It is, and will be historic. Epic even. And you might cry. Really. Let me know if you want to go, ’cos I am SO there.

Mutemath was the band that no one knew, but once you did, you were hooked like with crack. Next up is the Fashion from Denmark. They’re going to be big, so if that turns you off, don’t even listen. They only have a EP out stateside, LP comes in a month, but man oh man. Catchy, funky, like most things and nothings you’ve heard. It pleasures my ears to hear, puts a smile on my face, and makes my feet tap. Also the lead vocalist is artist Plastic Kid. He does all their videos, etc... check him out.

That about does it for a quick recap. Hit me up if you want/need to know anything else.

    Cheers.

  • Lookie Lookie

I've been volunteering at this place called the Community Cycling Center for the last year...we've been working on bikes for their Holiday Bike Drive, in which donated bikes are fixed up and given to under-privileged children, for a few months now. This is from their website...look what I did!

Remember our Holiday Bike Drive insiders? We're following 3 bikes from collection to Holiday Bike Drive when they'll go home with some lucky boy or girl. Well one of those bikes is no longer nameless. Skilled volunteer mechanic, Joe Wilson, has christened this one "America". Take a look below to find out why.

    Red HBD Bike Pre-Clean

Above is a photo of America shortly after she came to us through a bike collection hosted by Central East Portland Rotary. A little beat up and plain (but brimming with star potential) she hung out in our basement with the other Holiday Bike Drive contenders.

    HBD Bike Red Cleaned

The first step in America's transformation was a good cleaning by Ron Gullberg, a member of Central East Portland Rotary Club. In addition to hosting a bike collection, six Central East Portland Rotary Club members came in on November 15 to shake the dust off some of these bikes. Notice the rusty handlebars and yellowing seat? That's all about to change...

    HBD Bike Red Fixed

Last night, skilled volunteer Joe Wilson got her into shape and made her sparkle. After the mechanic work was done and the bright blue accents were added, he affectionately named her America. The next time you see her, she"ll be headed home with a child at our Holiday Bike Drive!

What the rain does to me...

It has begun. The rain is falling. It will not stop until next may. We know this, and are strangely fine with it.
Winter has descended on Portland, and like any good mammal, we begin hibernation and a lifestyle change.

What sorts of change? Well, in the summer we are used to long days, an abundance of sunshine, and warm weather. Our winter means that the sun goes down at five-o-clock. This means if you are lucky you get ten hours of sun, which comes on the heels of over fourteen hours a day during summer. So what is our response? We hide. In our homes, pubs, theatres, bistros, it does not matter. We feel the need to hide. If we do go outside, it is to get food and go back in.

Also, because of the warmer weather in summer, we walk and bike nearly everywhere and lounge about on patios, decks, and sidewalks. In the winter we will walk, but only short distances, so as to not get too soggy. Bicycling becomes a practice for the brave, and occasionally foolhardy. So how does our bohemian, European city get from here to there? Mass transit. Oh yes indeed. The bus is a humid, cramped, drying machine for the damp masses. It sails down flooded streets, sending up a wake onto the sidewalk like some wheeled boat of the road. The train has a permanently wet floor, and we stand far away from the doors. When we walk, it is without umbrellas, as those set you apart as a foreigner, and usually a hat or hood to protect yourself from the constant drizzle.

We use these transit choices to get to hiding spots. Pubs are nice. You can get a beer there to warm up, some soup or fries to help you dry out, and conversation to help you forget that it's been dark for hours already, and the sun won't show for another month or two. Movies are good, also. You can use them as a sort of transporter to warm dry climates. Or places with aliens or talking animals, if that's what you're into. One of our favourite things this time of year is music. We will dance, sing, or sit and absorb, but it is there nearly everywhere you walk into. It keeps you sane.

Finally, we must add a heavy layer of insulating fat. So we eat every chance we can. Cheap food, such as burritos from the local taqueria, Medium priced food, like a big bowl of pasta with winter veggies. A fancy meal of beautiful and delicious treats. It is nearly inconsequential. Our bellies must be filled.

This is how Portland copes. This is how we deal. This is my beautiful town in the winter. I'm glad it's here, and that it will go away in a few months. But mostly, it is nice to see it again. For some unknown reason, I've missed it.
